This Multi-Year Project highlights the technical problems of working with large windows and long spaces. We thoughtfully selected longer focal length lenses in order to add optical compression to the scene, which offset the length of the spaces. We also chose 1-point perspective compositions more than usual, which can help make a space feel shorter by not emphasizing the hypotenuse length of a room. Another challenge we faced was offsetting the strength of the light pouring in through the large windows. We used a combination of powerful strobes and large 12’x12’ blocking fabrics to combat the sun. Since almost all of the ambient lighting was heavily modified with strobes, we took care to place special attention on color temperature, lighting directionality, and shape to maintain a natural ambient feel. Sometimes we worked with the windows, not against them. We shot some compositions at specific times of the day to introduce visual interest with long shadows and light streaks on the empty floors and walls.
